ABOUT THE ARTIST
I am driven by materials and a constant exploration of the media I integrate into my work. I build color through hundreds of layers, carving and torching the Baltic birch by saturating the surface with pure pigments. My personal experiences provide the iconography and palette for the work. Inspired by my childhood, the work features the elegant stepped forms, sweeping curves and layered shapes of Art Deco, old American cars and the colors of Cuban tropical splendor.
ABOUT THE ART
Lyrical scrawls, gouges, deep scratches and repetitive mark making in oils + mixed media on Baltic Birch. My work references the experiences of migrants + immigrants with artifacts such as antique cigar boxes and obsolete machine plaques that remind the viewer of our shared human history.
