ABOUT THE ARTIST

I am a bit of a perfectionist in my work and love attempting to achieve hyperrealism and have my subjects seem as lifelike and three dimensional as possible. I love not only the depth and extreme detail that I can get with scratchboard but also that it is not seen very often. I have been working in this medium for over 10 years and everything I have learned with it has been self taught through experimentation. I am passionate about sharing and teaching the medium to others. I absolutely love nature, plants, and animals and my work centers around these things, I also like to experiment blending abstract with the hyperrealism or include a bit whimsy. I always encourage my viewer to get close to truly experience the layers of miniscule marks that make each piece have such depth and detail.

ABOUT THE ART

Scratchboard is a hard board with white clay covered in black ink. Various tattoo needles, an x-acto knife and fiberglass brushes are used to scratch the surface and remove the black ink to reveal the white layer underneath. Multiple layers of inking and scratching is done for colored portraits.
