ABOUT THE ARTIST
Charles Cushing is a graduate of The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1988) and has lived and worked in Philadelphia for over 40 years. He is well-known locally for his cityscapes of Philadelphia and over 600 of his original paintings are in public and private collections, including The Union League of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Convention Center. He also travels to various places (especially Italy) and paints landscapes on location.
ABOUT THE ART
I am a representational oil painter, working almost exclusively in oil on canvas, and would roughly describe my work as 'painterly realism.' I work 'en plein air' but also in the studio in the classic genres of landscape, cityscape, still-like, figure, and portrait. But I also do studio paintings from memory and imagination which I call 'capriccios' after a genre of 17th-century Italian art. In them I try to capture the strange logic of a dream. I also do commissioned work and desire to work in all genres like the 'Great Masters.' I have many artistic influences, including the Impressionists, but also 20th-century masters like Munch, De Chiricho, and Hopper.
