ABOUT THE ARTIST

I am inspired by color combinations and forms found in nature, gardens, rural, and urban settings. I enjoy creating abstract pieces that allow the viewer to interpret them in their own way. I start with an underpainting on a wood panel, canvas, or paper, and then build up the oil and cold wax layer by layer to add colors, shapes, and embellishments to draw in the viewer, occasionally adding collage elements of original prints, found papers or photography. Using a variety of everyday items such as corrugated cardboard, mesh from grocery produce, etc., I create marks in the cold wax. My work style is intuitive and frequently veers off mid-piece into a new unintended direction. When a piece is partially done, I do quick color and mass studies using the editing app on my phone's camera to consider hue and composition, frequently converting the image to black and white to check for contrast, and balance, before continuing to develop the final painting.

ABOUT THE ART

Abstract work created with multiple layers of oil paint and cold wax on cradled wood panels, stretched canvas, or paper, occasionally including collaged elements of original prints, found papers, or photography.
