ABOUT THE ARTIST
My earlier work was rooted in direct observation, documenting subjects over time with a slow, deliberate painting process. Now, working from photos and videos in the studio, my paintings have a different feel. Though I have permanent references that don't change, I feel the change in my subjects more than I did before. I'm more aware of the ephemerality of things. I want to stop time and relive the majesty of those moments. Though I capture moments in photos and videos, they are poor substitutes for a lived experience. The energy of the moment fades, and I must use paint to reclaim it, infusing my work with a new sense of longing.
ABOUT THE ART
My oil paintings are created from videos I record on location. As I am painting, I am aware of the loss of experiential elements when viewing a personal, lived event through a screen. I seek to understand and balance the lived experience with the technology.
