Printmaking
ABOUT THE ART

Starting with traditional printmaking techniques, Demaria etches and engraves copper plates. He coats these plates with ink, adds different oils, and turns these prints into unique art. These mono prints seamlessly blend the rigid structure of the engraved line with the fluid marks of painting.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

12,000 years ago, giant walls of ice, taller than skyscrapers, covered the landscape of the American Northeast. As this wall of ice progressed, it shredded and fracture the landscape. As this wall of ice receded, it left gestural carvings in its wake. Despite the fact this natural phenomenon was an impartial product of climate and physics, Demaria can’t help but see the movement preserved in geologic time through the emotional lens of artifice. By carving copper plates, like the landscape in the American Northeast was carved by glaciers, Demaria attempts to form a connection to structural framework beneath what he observes. On top of that rigid structure lines engraved into copper, Demaria creates loose and ephemeral monoprints which explore his emotional response to the landscape and how the space exists in his memory.
