About the ART

I start with sketches on location. In the studio I prime a canvas or in colorful acrylic. Before painting, I mix over 100 oil colors from 4 or 5 main colors. Then I apply the paint like laying down a mosaic, with no blending or overlap so that some of the acrylic underpainting shows.

About the ARTIST

One of my earliest memories is standing in front of a Monet waterlily painting (circa 1966). "Mesmerized" does not begin to describe how I felt. I like to think of that as the moment I was hooked. Drawing and painting have been my passion for as long as I've been me. And what makes me most excited about art is color. My goal is to bring the beauty and complexity of nature onto the canvas. I sketch on location and then transfer the image to a toned canvas. I mix over 100 colors from 4-5 tubes before I ever pick up a brush. I like to think of each paint stroke as an individual gem in a mosaic. I want to capture the forms and rhythms that evoke life and motion in nature. If I'm successful, then the viewer will escape life for a moment, and be mesmerized.
